About the FaSS

The Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS) is a Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) grant scheme administered and delivered by Marine Management Organisation (MMO). It is funded from the Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund, which will invest £304m into fishing and seafood businesses and coastal communities across England.

The FaSS provides financial assistance to projects in England that would not be possible without government support.

A wide range of activities can be supported through the scheme and the aims of the FaSS are

  • Creating a sustainable and resilient seafood sector

  • Reducing emissions and waste from the seafood sector

  • Cleaning up rivers, lakes and seas and supporting nature recovery

  • Boosting regional and economic growth within the seafood sector

The Fishing Animateur Project priorities are;

  • Projects to make fishermen safer, their boats safer and safer access to them.

  • Small harbour improvements for the benefit of the fishing community.

  • Small, adding value projects to empower fishermen to add value to their catch

  • Projects for the collective benefit of fishermen and fishermen’s associations.

Project support outside of our priority areas is limited and may incur a fee.

For all projects, you will need to complete a project enquiry form, if you would prefer to do this over the phone you can call the office on 01736362782.

 If your project is assessed and found to be outside our guidelines (our focus is on projects under £25,000 and in our priority areas), we will advise and, in many cases, provide an estimate for the work. We charge £50 per hour and £350 a day. For electric and hybrid vans, we charge £500 to write and submit your application and £500 when you receive the offer letter. Payment is made up front by debit or credit card.

We act as your agent; you are the applicant. We can introduce you to a credit union that may help with a loan to support your work.

 We welcome conversations with fishermen who are new to grants, and we are happy to help by posting information, working with family members, filling out forms, and using phone calls, texts, or WhatsApp.

The Fishing Animateurs are a Cornwall Rural Community Charity project. The Fishing Animateur Project would be possible without the charities and trust funds that support us. We have no formal links with Defra or the MMO. We use the term fishermen to describe the role, and we support male and female fishermen equally.
